New Micro-Forest in New Tecumseth

New Micro-Forest in New Tecumseth

In September, Greys for Green happily assisted with tree planting in Phase I of the new Micro-forest in Hillside Park in Alliston.

As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship, the Town of New Tecumseth is revitalizing a portion of Hillcrest Park with a native-based micro-forest, a densely planted area of trees, shrubs and perennials designed to model natural forests ecosystems.

These miniature ecosystems, championed by Akira Miyawaki, a pioneering Japanese botanist, create a competitive environment that accelerates the establishment of mature forests.  They act as green lungs, purifying the air and providing fresh air in urban environments plagued by pollution. They serve as biodiversity hotspots, offering refuge for diverse plant and animal species and restoring ecological balance. They provide shade and enhance the livability of communities. They offer emotional health benefits by providing areas for relaxation and fostering a connection with nature. Health experts agree – People who have a connection to nature are happier, healthier, and more mindful!
